Fred Sanfilippo ASIP Visiting Lectureship Program

For over four decades, Dr. Fred Sanfilippo has been a national/international leader in the clinical pathology and pathobiology research communities. During his exceptional career, Dr. Sanfilippo held appointments at four academic institutions as a faculty member, often in major departmental or institutional leadership roles, and made seminal contributions to the fields of immunology and transplantation through the robust productivity of his research program. Dr. Sanfilippo has been a member of the ASIP (formerly the American Association of Pathologists) beginning as a resident-trainee in 1977 and has served the Society in several roles including as ASIP President during 2002-2003. Dr. Sanfilippo credits membership in the ASIP and the many opportunities that the Society provided to him as key factors in his career development. In recognition of the value of ASIP membership and to give back to the Society, Dr. Sanfilippo has generously provided a $100,000 gift to establish a new program to benefit current and future generations of promising young scientists as they develop careers in pathobiology research. Dr. Sanfilippo’s gift is the largest single donation the ASIP has ever received and it will endow the Fred Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lectureship Program in perpetuity. This new program affords the ASIP with enhanced opportunities to promote individual ASIP members, their research groups, and their research accomplishments on the national stage.

The Fred Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lectureship Program will provide funding for ASIP members who are in the early stages of their academic careers to travel and visit other departments/institutions to give one or more research presentations as a distinguished visiting lecturer. The primary goal of this program is to provide exposure of promising young faculty to members of the larger pathobiology research community, increasing their national recognition and reputation. Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lecturers will benefit from both the national exposure provided and interactions with faculty at the host institution which may result in new collaborations that will advance research endeavors at both institutions and may generate other beneficial long-term relationships such as distance mentoring within their chosen field of study.

ASIP members at academic institutions who are in the early stages of their career (Assistant Professors and/or Associate Professors who have not yet been granted tenure), are eligible for the Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lectureship Program. Competitive nominees must have an established and productive research record and generally be a few years past their initial academic appointment. Given the typical academic timeframe for promotion and tenure, most research faculty will be eligible for several years. Individual ASIP members can be nominated several times, but only selected once as a Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lecturer. To provide maximum flexibility to individual (eligible) ASIP members, their department chairs, and host department chairs, a nomination for the Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lectureship program can be initiated by the individual researcher, their department chair, or the host department chair. The nomination package for the Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lectureship Program requires: (i) the CV of the nominee (providing evidence of funding and publications from the nominee’s laboratory), (ii) a letter of nomination from the department chair (describing the candidate’s potential as a pathobiology researcher), (iii) a letter of support from the hosting department, and (iv) a plan for the actual visit (including a proposed schedule of meetings with faculty and students). Approval of nominations for this program will be made using an ad hoc committee consisting of members of the elected ASIP leadership. Multiple Sanfilippo-ASIP Visiting Lecturers will be named each year and nominations will be accepted on a rolling basis. Giving to the ASIP: With his generous gift to the ASIP, Dr. Sanfilippo joins several ASIP Past-Presidents and other prominent members who have funded various Society initiatives and programs. Dr. Robert E. Stowell (President, 1964-1965) endowed the Robert E. Stowell Fund that continues to provide financial support for invited speakers at ASIP scientific meetings. Dr. Mark Sobel (President, 1999-2000) provided a gift to establish the A.D. Sobel - ASIP Education Fund which supports travel awards for several graduate students or postdoctoral fellows to attend ASIP scientific meetings each year. Dr. Avrum Gotlieb (President, 2001-2003) provided a gift to establish the Gotlieb Family Fund for Undergraduate Education in Pathobiology which supports travel awards for undergraduate students to attend the ASIP Annual Meeting. The family of Dr. George Michalopoulos (President, 2016-2017) provided a gift to establish the George K. Michalopoulos Junior Faculty Travel Award Fund which supports the travel of several young faculty to attend ASIP scientific meetings each year. Dr. Paul Monga (current Secretary-Treasurer and long-time Council member) provided a gift to establish the Hans-Monga - ASIP Trainee Travel Award Fund and the Rojkind-Monga - ASIP Trainee Travel Award for Excellence in Liver Pathobiology Research which provide travel awards for trainees working in specific areas of pathobiology research to attend ASIP scientific meetings. Dr. Bill Muller (Chair of the Research and Science Policy Committee and long-time Council member) provided a gift to establish The Marion and Lawrence (Larry) Muller Memorial Fund - ASIP Trainee Travel Award for Excellence in Neurodegenerative Disease Research and The Marion and Lawrence (Larry) Muller Memorial Fund - ASIP Trainee Travel Award for Excellence in Inflammation Research provide travel awards for trainees working in specific areas of pathobiology research to attend ASIP scientific meetings. Dr. Jonathon Homeister (Chair-elect of the Program Committee and member of Council) provided a gift to establish the GALL Travel Award in Cardiovascular Research Fund which provides travel awards for trainees working in specific areas of pathobiology research to attend ASIP scientific meetings. About Dr. Fred Sanfilippo: Alfred P. (Fred) Sanfilippo, MD, PhD, is currently Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Emory University School of Medicine, Professor of Health Policy and Management in the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, the Director of the Emory-Georgia Tech Healthcare Innovation Program, and Medical Director of the Marcus Foundation. Dr. Sanfilippo previously served Emory University as Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Chief Executive Officer of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Science Center, and Chair of the Board of Directors for Emory Healthcare. In his earlier career, Dr. Sanfilippo served as a faculty member at Duke University (where he became Professor of Pathology, Experimental Surgery, and Immunology), Johns Hopkins University (where he served as Chair of the Department of Pathology), and The Ohio State University (where he served as Dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, Senior Vice President and Executive Dean for Health Sciences, and CEO of the OSU Medical Center). Dr. Sanfilippo’s well-funded research programs have focused on the immunopathology of allograft rejection, receiving >$30M in funding and resulting in 3 patents, >225 original articles, 54 reviews, and 35 book chapters published to date. Dr. Sanfilippo served the ASIP from 1993-2003 as a representative to FASEB, 1996-2004 as a member of the ASIP Council, and as ASIP President in 2002-2003.
