Abraham David Sobel was born on September 29, 1909 and died on his 98th birthday. Mark Sobel, ASIP's Executive Officer, has established the Abraham David Sobel-ASIP Education Fund to perpetuate his father's lifelong interest in supporting education and training for young scientists.
The A. D. Sobel - ASIP Education Fund Scholar Awards support the education and training of young investigative pathologists at the ASIP Annual Meeting. The awards, presented for the top ten scientific abstracts submitted by ASIP trainees for the ASIP Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology, provide stipends of $750 and Certificates of Achievement. These abstracts MUST be submitted to ASIP topic categories.

To date, over 100 individuals and 7 institutions/organizations have contributed over $75,000 to the A. D. Sobel-ASIP Education Fund. Funds have supported trainee travel to attend the ASIP Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology, the Italian Society of Pathology and Translational Medicine (SIPMeT) National Congress, the ASIP Summer Academy, and the first three Marcos Rojkind-ASIP Trainee Travel Awards. (Effective 2015, a separate fund, largely supported by Satdarshan Paul S. Monga will support excellence in liver pathobiology trainee research.) The Fund also supports the ASIP Young Scientist Leadership Award, which recognizes trainee volunteer service to ASIP and outstanding research achievements at the earliest stages of a career in biomedical research.
