Women in Pathology Early Career Award for Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology

Award Description: The Marilyn G. Farquhar Early Career Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in the advancement of women experimental pathologists during the early phases of career (assistant/associate professor or equivalent). This award is named for Dr. Marilyn G. Farquhar who achieved much in her long career as an educator, researcher, and mentor. Among her many achievements, Dr. Farquhar trained numerous women scientists, many of whom went on to exceptional research careers themselves. The This award will be conferred on an early to mid-career ASIP member (either woman or man) who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in the advancement of women experimental pathologists during their career. Meritorious Awards Committee will consider nominees’ achievements related to training/mentoring women in experimental pathology, leadership within the field of experimental pathology, service to the community in the promotion of science, innovation in the recruitment and retention of women in experimental pathology, and contributions to the Society. The recipient of the ASIP Marilyn G. Farquhar Early Career Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology is recognized each year at the ASIP Annual Meeting.

Award Eligibility: Eligible candidates will be a regular member of the ASIP in good standing for five years prior to nomination. The typical nominee for the ASIP Marilyn G. Farquhar Early Career Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology will be early or mid-career scientists (Assistant or Associate Professor or equivalent), with an active research/training program at the time of nomination. Both women and men can be nominated for this award. Nominees should have sustained and significant contributions to the Society (through leadership and/or participation in Society activities/programs).

Nominations for the Marilyn G. Farquhar Early Career Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology should include:

1. The nominee's curriculum vitae (CV), including a complete bibliography of published research. The nominee’s CV should include clear descriptions of contributions to research, teaching, mentorship, leadership (including institutional leadership and leadership in the wider field of pathology), and contributions to the ASIP. The nominee’s CV should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.
2. A candidate’s statement describing their (i) training/mentoring of women in experimental pathology and success of their women trainees/mentees, (ii) leadership at their institution, in professional societies, and within the field of experimental pathology, (iii) service to the community in the promotion of science, and (iv) innovative approaches to the recruitment and retention of women in experimental pathology
3. Three letters of support from peers, including at least two from current ASIP members. Peer letters of support should address each element considered for the award, including the nominee’s training/mentorship of women in experimental pathology, leadership within the field of experimental pathology, service and promotion of science, innovation in recruitment and retention of women in experimental pathology, and engagement in the activities of the ASIP. Letters of support should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.
4. Three letters of support from former or current trainees/mentees describing the nominee’s outstanding mentorship and its impact on their training and/or careers.

Scoring Rubric: ASIP Marilyn G. Farquhar Early Career Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Advancement of Women in Experimental Pathology nomination packages will be scored based upon: (1) achievements in training/mentoring women in experimental pathology and success of their women trainees/mentees, (2) leadership at their institution, in professional societies, and within the field of experimental pathology, (3) service to the community in the promotion of science, (4) innovative approaches to the recruitment and retention of women in experimental pathology, (5) contributions to the ASIP, (6) strength of peer letters of support, and (7) strength of trainee/mentee letters of support.
