2010 ASIP Journal Study Program
Including the AJP Study Program in Pathogenesis and the JMD Study Program in Molecular Diagnostics

Mark E. Sobel, MD, PhD, Director of Journal Study Programs

The ASIP Journal Study Programs for The American Journal of Pathology (AJP) and The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics (JMD) offer you a unique opportunity to renew and update your knowledge in the pathogenesis of disease and molecular diagnostics. The program consists of two components, the AJP Study Program in Pathogenesis and the JMD Study Program in Molecular Diagnostics. Participants can elect to participate in each program component individually or to participate in both components simultaneously.

Meeting Objective/Target Audience The objective of the “2010 ASIP Journal Study Program” is to provide a forum for the exchange of new research in the molecular mechanisms, classification, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics of disease among physicians, scientists and investigators and to facilitate knowledge acquisition regarding issues and challenges related to care and prevention. At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1)  discuss the research underway and/or current molecular approaches to the diagnosis and prognosis of inherited diseases (including pharmacogenetics), molecular hematopathology (including clonality, translocations, and point mutations), cytogenetics, solid and soft tissue tumors, molecular genetic testing of infectious diseases (including bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens), DNA identity tests, and acquired diseases spanning systems biology (cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, immunopathology, matrix biology, metabolic and endocrine pathobiology, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and vascular biology); 2) demonstrate a gained level of knowledge of the methods and techniques being used by researchers and practitioners; and 3) utilize information and data that lead to improvements in human health.

The 2010 AJP Study Program in Pathogenesis component is specifically targeted to trainees, clinicians and researchers investigating mechanisms of disease who wish to advance their current knowledge of the cellular and molecular biology of disease. The 2010 JMD Study Program in Molecular Diagnostics is especially targeted to pathologists and other physicians, geneticists, technical laboratory directors, molecular pathology laboratory personnel, and trainees who are interested in the molecular basis of disease and the application of nucleic acid and protein assays for diagnostic and prognostic analysis of disease.

Examinations: Each issue of AJP will include an online examination comprised of up to 5 questions based on articles appearing in that particular issue. Each issue of JMD will include an online examination comprised of up to 10 questions.
Questions for each issue will be available for print and download on this webpage.  Later in the year, questions will be available online for online submission of answers; in the meantime, you may submit your answers using the answer sheet attached to the Questions and fax to 301-634-7990.

Deadline: The deadline for receipt of the Study 2010 Registration Form and online submission of answers and Evaluation Form is January 15, 2011.

Disclosure Policy: The ASIP requires that participants of journal-based educational programs be informed of an author's academic and professional affiliation, and the existence of any relevant financial relationship an author has with any proprietary entity producing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on patients, with the exemption of non-profit or government organizations and non-health care related companies. The intent of this disclosure is not to prevent an author from submitting a manuscript to the journal. This policy allows the participant to be fully knowledgeable in evaluating the information being presented. When an unlabeled use of a commercial product, or an investigational use not yet approved for any purpose is discussed in the journal article, it is required that authors disclose that the product is not labeled for the use under discussion or that the product is still investigational.

Disclosure includes any relationship that may bias one's presentation or which, if known, could give the perception of bias. These situations may include, but are not limited to: 1) stock options or bond holdings in a for-profit corporation or self-directed pension plan; 2) research grants; 3) employment (full or part-time); 4) ownership or partnership; 5) consulting fees or other remuneration; 6) non-remunerative positions of influence such as officer, board member, trustee, or public spokesperson; 7) receipt of royalties; 8) speaker's bureau; 9) other. For full-time employees of industry or government, the affiliation listed in the article will constitute full disclosure.
