Biosketch:
Timothy
Hla is a Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut Health
Center in Farmington, CT. He obtained his PhD from the George Washington
University in Washington, DC, and did a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular
Biology with Thomas Maciag at the Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross.
His laboratory has long focused on the molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis,
with a particular emphasis on lipid mediators. He cloned and characterized the
human cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 gene in endothelial cells and studied the role of
the COX-2 pathway in angiogenesis and tumor biology. He also discovered the
G-protein coupled receptor for sphingosine 1-phosphate and has characterized the
role of this lipid mediator in angiogenesis and vascular maturation. His
current research efforts are devoted to better understanding of the biology of
prostanoids and sphingolipids in vascular and tumor biology, with a special
emphasis on signaling mechanisms.
