Shared pathology informatics network (SPIN).

Abstract:
The NCI Shared Pathology Informatics Network (SPIN) program is devoted to the creation of a high-performance indexing and retrieval system for cancer researchers to identify anatomic pathology specimens from conventional clinical archives in participating institutions throughout the United States. This large cooperative project, presently focused on information system development, is being performed by two consortia (Harvard/UCLA and Indianapolis/Pittsburgh).  Substantial progress has been made on scalable and extensible representation of tissue specimens, formulation of a taxonomy for confidentiality and patient consent, and design of a distributed architecture for indexing and searching for specimens that supports investigator-directed queries with a standard Web browser on the internet.  The program suggests a strategy for high-performance annotation of clinical specimens, and applications of the system to tissue-based research in other areas of biochemical and molecular medicine.
