“I was trained to do everything but run a lab!”: lessons from labheads.

Abstract:
New P.I.s face challenges that neither graduate school or postdoc seem to have prepared them for.  Instead of fine- tuning experiments in a smoothly running laboratory, the day is spent in managing people, attending endless meetings, and struggling to find funding. In retrospect, there are many things P.I.s say they wish they had done when they began, such as being more careful when hiring, organizing the laboratory before it was running, and taking care of personnel problems before they erupted. By drawing on the experiences of other P.I.s, and on the training in organization and logic inherent in science, the transition from bench to management can be considerably eased.
