Biosketch
Dr. Abbas received his MBBS in medicine from the All-India Institute of
Medical Science (New Delhi, India), completed residency training in
pathology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s
Hospital, Boston, MA), and was a pathology fellow at Harvard Medical School
(Boston, MA), where he trained with Drs. Emil Unanue and Morris Karnovsky.
After a brief stint in London as a visiting scientist in the Division of
Immunology of the National Institute for Medical Research, Dr. Abbas
returned to Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital to join
the faculty. Dr. Abbas remained in Boston for 22 years, eventually becoming
Professor of Pathology, and Head of the Immunology Research Division. In
1999, Dr. Abbas moved to the University of California at San Francisco,
where he is Professor and Chairman in the Department of Pathology. Over the
years, Dr. Abbas has received several honors, including the
Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Award from the ASIP (1987), and the Irving M.
London Award from the Harvard-MIT MD Program in Health Sciences and
Technology (1988). Dr. Abbas served as Editor of Immunity from
1993-1996, as Associate Editor (1981-1985) and Section Editor (1987-1991)
for The Journal of Immunology, and as Associate Editor for The
American Journal of Pathology (1992-1996). Currently, Dr. Abbas is
Associate Editor for Cell, and serves on the Editorial Board of
Immunity. During his research career, Dr. Abbas has published over 150
peer-reviewed papers and invited reviews on a number of subjects, including
B-cell and T-cell development and regulation, cytokine-mediated regulation
of immune cell function, and immune cell apoptosis.
