PathFinders Experience
ASIP 2014 Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology

PathFinders is a mentoring program to provide trainees (especially those who have not attended Experimental Biology before) with a mentor during the meeting. The program is designed to match trainees with volunteer senior members of ASIP based on common interests.

My experience participating in the ASIP PathFinders program at the ASIP 2014 Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology was unforgettable. I was matched with Dr. Nancy Louis, an Assistant Professor of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine. Prior to the conference, she and I exchanged emails. It was already evident from our written correspondence that she would be a great PathFinders mentor. Upon our "officially" meeting each other, we instantly connected and had a very in-depth conversation about my career goals and plans once I finish my graduate degrees. She offered very valuable advice and gave me insight into various strategies to navigate my remaining years in graduate school. Dr. Louis was also very supportive of me at the awards ceremony and congratulated me several times on winning the ASIP Executive Award for Media Outreach. Her encouragement of my science media interests has reinforced my passion to pursue them even more diligently. Following the awards ceremony, Dr. Louis personally escorted me and introduced me to several faculty members and ASIP leaders. Being a relatively new member to the Society, this was very encouraging and reassuring for me. Her dedication and enthusiasm towards this program was evident and is highly laudable. I feel very privileged to have taken part in such a great program and I look forward to all the great things to come out of it in the future.
